In general, people behave the way they do because of the environment, or context, in which they operate. These behaviors are visible not only in the shared culture within an organization, but also in regional and functional subcultures.

Often times, the culture is not aligned with strategy. The culture may not support and facilitate the capabilities needed to achieve strategic goals and may in fact be undermining them. If engagement is not measured in terms of ambition, accountability, inspiration, pride, and support, then the desired behaviors, and by extension the results, may be difficult to realize.


Company culture is at the heart of competitive advantage. Because it determines how things are done and how people behave, it is the hardest thing for competitors to copy.
